1^st Announcement - Welcome!

Rewetting peatlands and developing innovative land-use concepts for peatlands represent key contributions to achieving climate action goals. Following the last three RRR conferences on the utilisation of wetland plants (paludiculture), the Greifswald Mire Centre warmly invites you to the 4^th RRR conference in Greifswald. This event provides a platform where science and practice converge, fostering dialogue and collaboration to further advance real-world solutions. We look forward to your active participation in this critical conversation for our shared future of sustainably managed peatlands.

Scope of the conference

The utilisation of wetland biomass has a rich historical background.  In response to global research efforts focused on renewable resources and climate protection, it has experienced a strong resurgence.  In 2024, "paludiculture" marked its 25^th anniversary since being called into life. We see significant advancements made in practical and scientific knowledge regarding rewetting, cultivation, biomass processing, marketing, policy development and awareness building. This conference aims to unite stakeholders involved in paludiculture, welcoming scientists, landowners and land users, administrators, business, artists, designers, policymakers, conservationists and all other interested people.

Programme

Presentations, discussions, posters, workshops, exhibitions and excursions will across varied mediums offering differing spaces for you to share and widen your knowledge. Exhibition

We want to highlight practical experiences and dedicate an afternoon to contractors, manufacturers, and other stakeholders, with a space to showcase their products and projects in pitches on a stage. This provides an opportunity for in-depth exchange and networking.

Venue

Welcome to Greifswald

Greifswald and the region around is rich in peatlands, with 10% of the area covered by peat. The region features unique coastal floodplain peatlands. Embedded within this landscape peatland research has a 200-year history in Greifswald. Over the last 30 years research has focused on peatland restoration and sustainable peatland utilisation.

The Hanseatic city

The city of Greifswald, situated in northeastern Germany on the Baltic Sea coast, is a founding member of the Hanseatic League of Towns. It is situated amidst extensive forests, peatlands, and lakes, including seven national parks and biosphere reserves and many large restoration projects. The market square with its medieval churches offers visitors one of the most beautiful Northern German market place ensembles.

Registration

Registration will open in the beginning of 2025 and will be announced via Mail. There will be an early bird registration possibility that will last until 31.05.2025.
Registration deadline is 15.08.2025.

Abstract Submission

Abstract submission is possible from January 2025 on the RRR2025 website. The deadline for abstract submission is 28.02.2025. The notification of acceptance will be sent by 31.05.2025 at the latest.

Organisation

Associates of the Greifswald Mire Centre host the RRR2025 conference.
It is jointly organised with the Thuenen Institute.

The Greifswald Mire Centre is the interface between science, policy and practice in all peatland related questions – locally and globally. It unites over 100 peatland experts in one place. Partners in the Greifswald Mire Centre are the University of Greifswald, the Michael Succow Foundation and DUENE e.V. The Thünen Institute develops scientific based decision-making tools for the German government's agricultural, forestry, fisheries and consumer protection policies. Research in the field of peatlands focuses on the status quo of GHG emissions and the effectiveness and feasibility of approaches to reduce them, such as water management on agricultural peatlands, paludiculture and restoration.
